Pinyjapinyja
Pinyjapinyja is a Walmajarri word meaning shell decorations from the sea, traditionally worn around the neck.
This collection holds an especially personal story.
Created in collaboration with my daughter, Ngoorloona, Pinyjapinyja honours her Māori & Cook Islander heritage alongside my own Walmajarri culture.
The artwork began with Kukaja, one of Jalayimiya's original artworks. As I reimagined the piece through a new palette of ocean blues, turquoise, soft pinks & deep inky tones, the colours immediately reminded me of the iridescent beauty of pāua shell.
That connection became the inspiration for Pinyjapinyja, Shells from the Sea.
A meeting of our cultures, interpreted through colour, connection & wearable art. Most importantly, a collection created between mother & daughter.
